Discover common threads and make visual connections as you explore the IMA on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Guests will enjoy family art-making and activities, as well as a featured community art project, entitled One and All, led by Theater of Inclusion. All activities and parking are free for the day.

Activities:

One and All: In summer 2013, Theater of Inclusion — a collaboration of Indianapolis-based artists Rebecca King and Dante Ventresca — began their community art project One and All in the spirit of Dr. King’s understanding of the “interrelatedness of all communities.” Members of the community can submit pictures with one-word descriptions that are representative of the things they love, that inspire and make us better. Film and Discusion: Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin (83 min.): This powerful documentary chronicles the life of openly-gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who is best known for organizing the 1963 March on Washington, D.C. Screenings will take place in DeBoest Lecture Hall, running continuously from 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Discussion at 1 pm. Co-sponsored by Indiana Youth Group and American Friends Service Committee.

Freetown Village Singers: Visitors will experience the joy and dynamic power of spirituals — American traditional music used to uplift, heal, comfort and inspire in times of crisis — while learning the hidden meanings often tucked into the words of the songs. Performances will take place at noon and 1:15 pm in the Floor 4 contemporary galleries and will last approximately 30 minutes.

No BS! Brass Brand: No BS! Brass Brand embraces the spirit of New Orleans into its original East Coast modern funk. Their danceable arrangements, put together by their conservatory trained musicians, draw inspiration from funk, jazz, klezmer, calypso and Led Zeppelin.

“Ask Me!” Roaming Docents and Hold It!: IMA docents will be available throughout the galleries to answer questions, discuss the artwork, and share general information about the museum. Hold it! is a hands-on experience for visitors of all ages facilitated by docents. Discover carts filled with objects everyone can hold and see up close.
