DK @ IMA: Picture This

at Unknown

Dance Kaleidoscope offers unique experiences, so each concert in a season is wildly different from the last. With Picture This, DK offers two dance pieces with connections to art currently exhibited at the IMA. Consider visiting IMA’s galleries to see the art referenced below. Then see how DK Artistic Director David Hochoy used the imagery and impression of art to create dance. Heart of Joy
“When Heart of Joy was originally put together on stage with costumes and lighting, many of the sections reminded me very much of Georgia O'Keefe's spectacular swirling landscapes and desert coloring, especially her flower series. The painting Jimsonweed is a prime example. While her work wasn’t a conscious inspiration as I created this piece, I would have to say the feel is very much Georgia O'Keefe.”
—David Hochoy Girl at the Piano: Recording Sound
“In Theodore Roszak's painting, Girl At The Piano: Recording Sound, I was attracted to the mysterious expression the girl has in the painting. She presented a mystery to me that I felt compelled to solve. “For the music, I chose Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini which allowed me to invent several vignettes of the girl interacting with various family members and friends. We meet her dominating father, her mother, brother, teacher and an artist friend.”
