Meet the Artists First Friday and Gala Reception

View the works of 18 prominent local African-American artists during the 26th annual presentation of "Meet the Artists," beginning Wednesday, January 29 and continuing through Saturday, March 22 at Central Library. The exhibit, sponsored by The Indianapolis Public Library's African-American History Committee, has become one of the city's premiere cultural events while providing an avenue for African-American artists to showcase their works. The exhibit will feature works in a variety of artistic mediums throughout the Library. This year's participating artists include Alpha Blackburn (acrylics), Angela Fisher (soft sculptured dolls), Ashley Robinson (mixed media), Carol E. Barnett (jewelry), Denise Smith (knit sculpture), Gary Gee (mixed media), Ivery Wilson-Teague (mixed media sculpture), Kenneth Hordge (pencil), Kim Ross Brown (floral design), Kris Komakech (mixed media), Lj McCaleb-Doucoure (photography), Nora Musu (mixed media), Octavius Lettsome (color pencil), Ray Howard, Jr. (jewelry), Rosemary Turentine (mixed media), Samuel E. Vazquez (graffiti art), Teri Cox (jewelry) and Will Watson (acrylic). A youth exhibit presented by Broad Ripple High School Performing Arts along with Herron Art students Kylen Bradburn and Madeline Hudson also will be featured. The entire community is invited to meet the artists and enjoy an evening of cultural entertainment during the "Meet the Artists Gala Reception" on Saturday, February 8 from 5:45 – 10 p.m. at Central Library. This free event will feature a number of performers, including vocalist Cynthia Layne, comedian Lady Luncha'bell, poets Matt Davis and Januarie York, and the Demetrius West and Authority gospel choir. Also featured will be the Fashion Awareness fashion show coordinated by Nikki Blaine. Young people are invited to participate in a jewelry-making workshop coordinated by Ray Howard, Jr. Throughout the evening, notable African-American authors will sell and sign copies of their works. These include Yvonne Harris, John Covington, Theresa McMiller, Sophia Janell Taylor, Tammy Sloss and Delores Thornton. New this year will be a special First Friday event to be held on March 7 from 6 – 9 p.m. during which the public can attend artist demonstrations and enjoy music and refreshments.
