A glimpse across today’s fiction landscape reveals that there is hardly a “standard” or “typical” short story. Instead, short fiction may assume many forms and make use of many different devices to reach and excite readers. In this class participants will explore some of the innovative forms and methods writers have used to produce compelling fiction—from interview transcripts, to encyclopedia entries, to confessionals, to tabloids, to photography-embedded fiction—before crafting their own stories that adopt similarly thrilling forms. In addition to discussion and exploratory writing activities, time will also be devoted to sharing and workshopping work with one another.
