“Nothing happens nowhere,” Elizabeth Bowen’s maxim states, and yet while writers create characters with care, fret over point of view, and diligently work out plot, setting is often a given or a mere afterthought. In this workshop, we will look at examples of effective setting descriptions by well-known writers of a variety of styles and genres. Some samples create a new world while others use descriptive details of the familiar to establish atmosphere, and to reveal character, emotion, and more. After reviewing the samples, we will complete writing exercises that help us to better understand and emulate the settings of the masters.
