Voice is an elusive quality that we use to describe an author’s work. It’s often confused with style, but stands alone as a result of all the technical choices made by a writer. A writer’s voice is distinct from everyone else—it is how a character expresses herself and it is the words and sentences the author uses. At the most basic, voice is a reflection of who you are.

In this workshop we will learn how to develop and deepen our unique voices. We will examine a variety of modes of writing and analyze the voice of works we admire. We will also work on exercises to further our understanding of our own distinct expression through the written word. Please bring with you a story/novel or poem by another author whose voice you admire, and wish to explore.

Melissa Fraterrigo’s short story collection, “The Longest Pregnancy,” was published by Livingston Press (2006) and awarded the Tartt First Fiction Award. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in a variety of literary journals and anthologies including the Massachusetts Review, Arts &Letters, Puerto del Sol, storySouth, and Northwest Review, among others. Twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Carolina Quarterly awarded Fraterrigo the Charles B. Wood Award for Distinguished Writing. She earned her MFA at Bowling Green State University and currently lives in West Lafayette, Indiana, with her husband and two daughters.
