“Prose is architecture, not interior decoration.” Ernest Hemingway
Structure is the way a novel “holds itself’ together. Memoirs follow the same principles. It may help to create an initial outline, but effective structure occurs in process, built scene-by-scene as the writer develops her characters, characters, plot, tone, setting and pace. In this class, aspiring novelists and memoirists will participate in writing exercises and discuss how to think about structure as they write.
