Pop-Up Appliance Art Show in Garfield Park

Pop-Up Appliance Art Show in Garfield Park

Presented by Big Car at Unknown

Big Car Collaborative activates K&S Appliance store on 2620 S. Shelby Street in Garfield Park with a site-specific pop-up art show involving local and national artists. K&S Appliance store is a one-man operation run and owned by Coty McCollum; selling refurbished appliances and providing service calls. The exhibition entitled Good Vibrations will be available to visitors on July 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a closing event on Aug. 8 from 6-8 p.m. Officially, the show started at the end of June as part of the Garfield Park Better Block event, but is now expanding and inviting local Indianapolis artists to participate such as, Alan Goffinksi (of Know No Stranger), Jason Pittenger-Arnold (of General Public Collective), Nathaniel Russell, Jim Kelly, who lives in Garfield Park, and more. The show also features a tandem collaboration with Elsewhere museum in Greensboro, NC. Big Car’s artist-in-residence for the summer, Niina Cochran, coordinated the collaboration, having worked there prior to her time at Big Car. Elsewhere is a living museum and art residency set inside a former three-story thrift store. During Niina’s residency she has been living in, interpreting, and supporting the Garfield Park area through her blog, attending community meetings, and the organization of Good Vibrations within the neighborhood. The show exhibits a mixture of drawings and writings exploring the inner lives of large home appliances; their experiences in counting time, searching for a place called home, and coming to terms with aging and deterioration. The initial exhibition showcased work by John Clark, Andy Fry, Tom Streit, Anne Laker, and Cochran. During Better Block, visitors were asked to create their own drawing of a home appliance and place it on an appliance within the store with magnets. This encouraged people to come into the store, be aware of their surroundings, and to visualize the possibilities of the neighborhood. Featuring local artists: Christopher Dance, Alan Goffinski (of Know no Stranger), John Goodman, Jim Kelly, Kris Komachech, Johnny McKee, Ners Neonlumberjack, Jacqueline Pichardo, Jason Pittenger-Arnold (of General Public Collective), Nathaniel Russell, Janet Schneider, and Becky Wilson. Elsewhereians: Jennie Carlisle, Fionn Duffy, Andrew Fansler, Justus Harris, Molly Hastings, Chris Kennedy, Audrey Love, Courtney McCracken, Sam Metzner, Lyric Morris, Mitchell Oliver, George Scheer, Katie Shlon, Cyrus Smith, Danny Wirtheim, and Valerie Wiseman.
