Jay Bird McKracken Art & Design Opening

Indiana Artist Jay Bird McKracken will be revealing his second official production of his art at the Body Mind and Core Studio.

McKracken’s creative process is unorthodox as he completes all of his work, with very little movement of his arms and hands, on a computer due to his lifelong neuromuscular disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

SMA is a form of Muscular Dystrophy that attacks the skeletal muscles of the body often leaving the individual motionless and unable to walk.  McKracken, born in 1976, has utilized a power wheelchair for mobility since 1981.

Although he could not stand, at a younger age he had more mobility in his arms, and was keen to picking up sketching as a positive creative outlet. When asked about his early years, McKracken replied “While the other kids went on adventures using their bicycles, I created my own with a pencil.”

Very little movement has been an obstacle for the artist each day of his life.  Therefore, McKracken began to explore the best venue for his series launch relating to movement.  In comes the Body Mind and Core Yoga Arts Studio in Carmel, Indiana.

Studio proprietors Matt Hayden and Natalie Perez-Hayden heard of McKracken’s search and quickly contacted the artist to show at their venue. “Most of us experience movement in full capacity daily and often forget how fragile our bodies are.  Being an owner of a studio dedicated to movement and motion, we knew our venue would be an excellent fit for this man to introduce his creative energy to us all,” stated Matt Hayden.

On November 8th, There will be a yoga class beginning at 4:30p celebrating movement, followed by a discussion with the artist and wine and h’or doeurve service.  The show will be open to the public beginning at 6p.
