We like to brag about our species—how intelligent we are, how imaginative and artistic, how adept at understanding and manipulating nature. True enough. But our species stands out for some less noble traits, as well, such as our penchant for mechanized violence, from solo gunmen to gangs to armies; our creation of vast social and economic inequalities (the richest 400 Americans own more wealth than all 41 million African Americans); our reckless consumption of irreplaceable natural resources; our wholesale extinction of other species; and our endangering of all life on Earth by heating the atmosphere and oceans. Torture, slavery, civil strife, wars of religion, racial profiling, gender discrimination, political refugees, epidemic levels of drug addiction and suicide, and high rates of incarceration are all symptoms of these more troubling human traits. How can one write about such matters without spreading gloom, without coming across as self-righteous? Our workshop will combine brief writing invitations with discussion of the relation between the literary arts and the pressing environmental and social issues of our day.
