Workinonit

Presented by Marian University and Talbott Street Art Fair at Unknown

Indianapolis, INDIANA– Workinonit features the collages of Derrock Burnett and will be on display in the Marian University Art Gallery in Marian Hall from March 19th-May 1st.  Burnett will host a workshop on collage on March 19th 12:30-3:00 p.m. (register by emailing jambroise@marian.edu), and an opening reception of the exhibit will be held March 19th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The workshop and the reception are free and open to the public and are generously sponsored by the Talbot Street Art Fair.

Burnett’s work reflects his experience as an African American male in the hip hop era.  The artist explains, “Concentrating on the figure and portrait, I make expressive compositions with a variety of images collaged into a complete illustrative thought….  It’s the blending of these materials and ideas that reminds me of how music sounds, looks or feels in my work.  Therefore, I explore the juxtaposition of visual sound with images of race, identity, and responsibility…”

Burnett earned his M.F.A. from Indiana State University. His work has been featured in New American Paintings, and in 2013 he was the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series National Artist at Art Basel in Miami, Florida.  Burnett’s work is in collections across the U.S. including the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois.

The Marian University Art Gallery is located on the west end of the second floor of Marian Hall.  Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, although appointments at later times are welcome.  Please contact Gallery Director Jenny Ambroise at jambroise@marian.edu with any inquiries.
