Enjoy an evening of music inspired by folk songs from around the world! Alexander Shelly and soprano Malin Christensson present Gustav Mahler’s intimate and lyrical Symphony No. 4, a work built around a children’s song from the Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Boy’s Magic Horn”). Béla Bartók was inspired to compose his suite, Rumanian Folk Dances, by his travels to Transylvania where he heard two gypsy violinists playing exotic sounding dances. Finally, experience Luciano Berio’s cycle, Folk Songs, representative of his lifelong love of folk art: “When I work with that music I am always caught by the thrill of discovery.”
