Eudora Welty said, “Every story would be another story, and unrecognizable if it took up its characters and plot and happened somewhere else… Fiction depends for its life on place.” John Gardner said, “Detail is the lifeblood of fiction.”

A writer’s goal should be to ground reader and evoke their senses by integrating the most significant details, in the most effective manner, and in the just right amount–like a perfect seasoning–into their fiction. Long time faculty member David Hassler will show you how to find the right balance of detail in setting and description so you can ground your story in its own perfect “where and when” to bring it to life while avoiding the perils of 19th Century-esque static descriptions and lazy best-seller dossier descriptions that make us all cringe–and skip right over them. You’ll leave this class ready to take your writing up another notch by sharpening your observation skills and fine tuning your focus.
