Synesthesia - Music as Art

Presented by Art Bank Artists Studios and Gallery at Unknown

The Art Bank Artists will present “Synesthesia—Music as Art,” premiering as part of the IDADA First Friday Art Tour, Friday, December 4th, 6-9pm, in the Feature Room of the Art Bank. With over 30 artists participating, each inspired by a song, much like its name, this group show will satisfy the senses. Admission is free. “Synesthesia—the way that one of our senses affects another—is always involved in the creation of art,” said artist Andrew Koeling. “The way things smell, sound, or taste influence how a piece of work will turn out. This show takes that concept and elevates it, making it central, and gives viewers a new perspective with how to approach a particular work.”

About the Group Show

Some of the Art Bank Artists identify as synesthetes, and some not. The purpose of the show, though, whether the artist had synesthesia or not, was to celebrate the concept of music through the visual avenue of art. Each artist has selected a song and will interpret that song into their art. Given that the Art Bank houses photographers, painters, and sculptors, each interpretation will still contain the artist’s voice, blended in with the song of choice.

The Art Bank chooses the month of December as the Group Show month in order to celebrate the community the artists have created through their affiliation with the Art Bank. At a time of the year when families tend to come together, the Art Bank Artists feel the connection to their fellow artists, and wish to celebrate each artist’s uniqueness, point-of-view, and voice.
