Artist Mariam Ghani creates evocative and visually arresting videos that examine specific sites, whether the rocky terrain and sea of southwestern Norway, urban landscapes of New Mexico, or varying locales in St. Louis. Through a process of research and collaboration, she produces new narratives through astonishing vistas that feature performers, sometimes herself, interacting with the land in novel ways. Incorporating original scores and sometimes spoken narration, she unravels the complex memories and unstable histories of her chosen subject matter.
The three films on view were produced in collaboration with choreographer and performer Erin Ellen Kelly, with whom Ghani has been working since 2006, and feature scores by composer and musician Qasim Naqvi.
This exhibition will feature a trilogy of her video work over a period of 11 months, presenting one video at a time:
