Local artist Phil O’Malley will discuss his featured works in a public art exhibit opening reception Friday, Feb. 26,  at Tarkington Tower Condominium.

A professional studio artist and designer in Indianapolis, O’Malley says he has painted the past four decades here in the Midwest after having lived his first decade about 40 miles west of Cape Cod.

He creates two- and three-dimensional works in fine and culinary arts, interior design, as well as architectural, graphic and event design. He says all of the endeavors have symbiotically fed his art to maturity.

“Technique is the consequence of concept,” O’Malley says. “While making my art, I may not know exactly where I am heading, but I do know how to get there. By allowing my technique to be the consequence of the painting’s concept and following a working path of expected surprises—coupled with fearless exploration—I’m collaborating with the nuances and idiosyncrasies of both the materials and the surface.

“We three engage in real and complicated conversations as we create unique visual experiences by revealing moments from these conversations,” he added. “Similar to peeking, I adjust as I go.”

O’Malley studied Interior Design and Construction Technology in the Purdue School of Engineering and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
