This is a two-day workshop for artists who want to concentrate on painting light in landscapes with award-winning Santa Fe artist Peter Nisbet. Nisbet will explore all aspects of light from sources in nature and the value scale to how to portray light with paint. The workshop will be a combination of lecture, demonstrations, painting sessions and critique. In addition to the workshop, participants are invited to his public presentation at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 14, where he will share his love for, and work in, the Grand Canyon.

Nisbet has been a self-described “student of fine art” for 39 years, beginning in water colors and proceeding to oils. He has traveled to such remote places as the South Pole and China, but his preferred locale for painting is in the deserts of the Southwest and Mexico. He has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions across the country, including the Eiteljorg’s Quest for the West® Art Show and Sale since 2008. He has received numerous awards including Eiteljorg awards: the Henry Farny Award for Best Painting (2008 and 2009), the Artists’ Choice Award (2012),The Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Prize (2012) and the Victor Higgins Award of Distinction (2014). Nisbet is represented in galleries in San Francisco, New York City, Tucson and Santa Fe.

Notes from the artist: “I would say the workshop suggests some previous experience is needed with outdoor painting, from beginners to intermediate level. Artists may work in the medium they prefer. The workshop is about light–not specifically any medium. I prefer to work in oils, and will focus on creating oil/mixed media plein air paintings. In terms of painting style, I am an old school classical realist painter, specializing in Western landscapes. An outdoor easel is suggested for painters. Inexperienced painters may want a list of suggested materials such as tube colors and mediums, brushes, etc. I will provide and answer any other questions upon request.” [Nisbet’s contact information will be provided upon registration.]
