In one venue, on one weekend, IndyFringe and the Indiana Writers Center will be bring together Indianapolis theatre groups to work alongside each other and produce the plays of emerging artists.  Six short plays were chosen from works created over the past year at the Indiana Writers Center.  The writers are teamed with local theatre companies to direct and cast the plays.  Four of the playwrights have never had work produced before on any stage.

This festival gives writers, directors and performers a chance to meet and work alongside each other, which in turn provides opportunities to work on future projects.
The subjects of the plays is wide ranging.

In one, a couple in a restaurant agree to receive a free meal.  To do so, however, they must confront their worst fears in a kind of game show gone wrong.  A women who writes suicide notes on contract breaks one of her own business rules and experiences the consequences.   An elderly woman is confronted with information that she may not be the person she always thought she was.  A small group of people at a city council meeting prepare for the end of the world.   The plays have been written by playwrights who don’t know the rules…..and therefore, they feel free to do anything.

“We have six very strong plays.  Several of them are quite funny, and others will provoke and stimulate thought and discussion.  Some do both.  The student plays have been matched to theaters that share their ethos, so everyone should have fun with this event—the theaters, the playwrights, the actors, and especially, the audience,” says Andy Black, producing playwright and faculty member at the Writers Center.

Audiences may not have seen many of these local theatre groups before, so it provides audience members the opportunity to get a sense of what is happening in the Indianapolis theatre scene.  It also provides a showcase for local theatres.

The festival takes place at 8 pm on Friday/Saturday April 15/16 and 2 PM on Sunday, April 17.  Tickets are $10 at www.indyfringe.org or at the door half an hour before show.
