Bach's St. John Passion

Bach's St. John Passion

Presented by Indianapolis Symphonic Choir at Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center

Tickets for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir’s first performance in more than 30 years of Bach’s St. John Passion are now on sale. Almost exactly 292 years to the date after its debut in Leipzig, Germany, the St. John Passion will be performed at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center at the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets range from $20-$45 and may be purchased at indychoir.org or by calling the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir at (317) 940-9057. Student tickets are available for $15.

“This performance of the St. John is remarkable on a number of levels,” suggests Artistic Director Eric Stark. “Our last performance of this pillar of classical music was more than 30 years ago – suffice it to say, it is high time the St. John makes its return to our concert season. Additionally, the Symphonic Choir is comprised of more than 200 singers, but this one-night-only performance features the 40-voice Symphonic Choir Chamber Singers instead of the full chorus. A truly intimate, unique musical experience with the ornamented flair of the Baroque period.”

Adds Executive Director Michael Pettry, “Eric and the singers will realize Bach’s vision for a theatrical performance, one that engages the audience member in the passion story, perhaps one of the composer’s primary interests in penning this piece. Moreover, this is the first performance of Eric conducting the St. John, a piece he has been studying for more than 25 years. The performance is quite the confluence of significant moments for the composer, the Choir and the community.”

The Symphonic Choir is joined by the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, which will perform on period (historic) instruments and a cast of five vocal soloists.

This performance is made possible by Title Sponsor Barnes & Thornburg, with additional support from Morris Machine Company and QDiscovery. For performance details, audio preview links, photos and ticket information, visit indychoir.org.
