Roundtable with Local Literary Translators

Roundtable with Local Literary Translators

at Indy Reads Books

Without translators, we wouldn’t have access to classics by authors like Sappho, Victor Hugo, and Franz Kafka or contemporary bestsellers by writers like Isabel Allende, Haruki Murakami, and Stieg Larsson. Yet the work of literary translators is often misunderstood or simply invisible to readers. This roundtable discussion with local translators will give you the opportunity to learn more about the skill, precision, and creativity required to translate literature. Translators will discuss how they go about the process of translation and read from their work. You will also have the opportunity to pick up some literature in translation to expand the borders of your reading and support Indy Reads Books.

The roundtable will feature Polish translator Karen Kovacik, a professor at IUPUI and poet laureate of Indiana 2012-2014, and Maureen Lucier, a freelance translator from French of literature, art history, and cultural studies, among other genres. The roundtable will be moderated by Corine Tachtiris, who translates from French and Czech and has taught translation at various colleges in the U.S. and France.
