Do you feel like you’ve been writing in a vacuum? Do you have a novel completed or one in progress that needs feedback? Have you heard about writing workshops and writing groups, but afraid to take the plunge? This is an entry-level workshop for novel writers of all genres. Each student will submit at least one piece of work to be critiqued during the workshop and will be responsible for critiquing manuscripts submitted by other workshop participants.
While respecting the individual style and intent of the writer, works will be critiqued for specific issues (e.g., word choices, inconsistencies, and confusing passages) as well as global issues (e.g., plot, character development, point of view, and pacing). The workshop will also include in-class writing exercises, as time permits.
Submissions will be limited to twenty pages of manuscript (12 pt. font, 1 – 1 ½ inch margins, double spaced), preferably ending at the end of a chapter or scene. For submissions taken from the middle of your novel, a brief synopsis of the story and where the submission fits into it must be included.
Note that the first day of the workshop will be devoted to learning how best to offer critique and how to best utilize critique given to you. This session will be taught concurrently with the “How to Critique Fiction” class.
