Midwestern quilters to exhibit at Indianapolis Museum of Art

Show inspired by Marie Webster quilts, pioneering American designer

Artists from eight Midwestern states will be exhibiting their quilts at the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Bret Waller Gallery from June 24 to September 4.  The twenty-six quilt makers include fourteen from Indiana.

The exhibition, entitled Dialogues:  Contemporary Responses to Marie Webster Quilts, is sponsored by the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) Indiana.  It was juried by Niloo Paydar, Curator of Textiles and Fashion Arts at the IMA.  The SAQA exhibit is organized in conjunction with IMA’a exhibition of A Joy Forever: Marie Webster Quilts.  Webster, an Indiana native, wrote the first book about the history of quilt making in 1915.  Her house in Marion, Indiana, a National Historic Landmark, is now the home of Quilters Hall of Fame.

“Visitors to the museum will have a rare opportunity to view both an exquisite collection of ground-breaking historical quilts by Marie Webster and contemporary pieces made by artists inspired by her quilts,” said Kate Lenkowsky, SAQA Indiana’s regional representative.

A panel discussion entitled When Artists Step Out of Their Comfort Zone is planned on June 23 at 4:30 PM in the DeBoest Lecture Hall at the IMA.  It is free and open to the public. Those attending will have an opportunity to preview the exhibition.

There is no admission fee for the Dialogues exhibition or panel discussion. An $18 admission fee is required to view the Webster exhibition for non-members of the IMA.  For more information about the IMA please visit: www.imamuseum.org
