Silent German Summer Series: Destiny (1921)

A young woman (Dagover) is about to be married when her lover is collected by Death.  Weary of his work, Death (Goetzke) takes up residence in a small village, where the young woman follows him.  She begs Death to release her lover, and Death agrees to a game: if she can keep just one of three doomed men from his fate, he will release the young man.  This is one of the most popular of director Fritz Lang’s silent films, made before his triumph with the Metropolis (1927).  Live score by pianist Roger Lippincott.
