Are you a writer who also likes the visual arts? Or do you like visual arts and have an interest in writing? If so, haiga might be the perfect form for you! Haiga is a Japanese form that combines haiku and visual art. Ancient Japanese masters often complemented their brush paintings with haiku, and their haiku with brush paintings. This eventually came to be known as haiga. While brush painting is still a familiar method used in modern haiga, today many artistic forms are utilized, such as sketches, watercolor, mixed media, photography, and computer graphics.

In this two-session class, participants will learn the history, styles, and techniques of haiga. In session one we will explore the elements of haiku through the use of haiga samples, practice writing our own haiku, and learn drawing techniques that help your eyes and hands work together as one. In session two, we will focus on how to create images that complement our haiku, and work to develop our own haiga through various prompts and exercises.

There is no previous experience necessary in haiku or the visual arts for this class. The idea is to learn to write haiku through visual art, and to produce visual art through the writing and study of haiku. Art materials will be provided.
