Georges Bizet’s Carmen is a thrilling tale of passion and obsession. Carmen, a beautiful and fiery gypsy, seduces soldier Don José, who falls for her, despite professing his fidelity for a peasant girl from home. Carmen also draws the attention of bullfighter Escamillo, who attempts to win her heart. Seduction and intrigue captivate throughout, weaving this musically dramatic tale.

You’ll experience music that is, in Bizet’s own words, ‘vivacious’ and ‘full of color’ – an exquisite palette for the silent movie era inspired, semi-staged production, that serves as a nod to the centennial of the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

Led by Music Director Krzysztof Urba?ski, the ISO and renowned mezzo-soprano Oksana Volkova in the title role will perform the four-act opera. Tenor Evan Bowers, who performed Carmen with Urba?ski in Trondheim, Norway, will sing the role of Don José, the Spanish soldier who loves the captivating Carmen. We are proud to collaborate with the Indiana University Opera Theatre School, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir for these performances.

Carmen will be performed in French with English supertitles.
