38th and Shine

38th and Shine

Presented by Great Places 2020 and Community Partners at Tarkington Park

’38th and Shine’ is both a community event and an art performance designed to bring together the diverse neighborhoods around 38th & Illinois in a creative, collaborative act of history making! On August 27th, 2016 we plan to break the world record for most sparklers lit simultaneously to celebrate both the creativity and the people of what is being called the ‘Maple Crossing’ Great Place. For more information visit http://38thandshine.com.

Registration opens at 6:30pm on August 27th at tables set up at Tarkington park along 39th Street. A section of the park will be cordoned off as a Lighting Area. Only registered participants wearing a designated wrist-band will be allowed into this area.

The Lighting Area will consist of a grid of 11’x 11’ units with 4 people per unit. A few minutes before the Lighting area is opened all Lighting Captains will position themselves within a unit. At 8pm the gates will open and all participants will walk in and choose a unit to stand in. The Lighting Captains will hand out sparklers from their Sparkler Kit and an MC will announce a countdown. At 8:30pm the first lighting will take place to attempt to break the World Record followed by a second lighting attempt 15 minutes later.

The entire process will be recorded according to standards set by the Guinness World Record authorities. A video team will shoot a video of the event which will be edited and shared with participants over social media. Portapotties and Food-trucks will be available outside the Lighting Area.

In the event of rain the event will be postponed by exactly three week to Saturday September 17, 2016. If the weather is looking bad please check http://38thandshine.com and social media for a specific announcement of any change.

The Great Places 2020 initiative is a collaborative community development initiative led by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) designed to turn six neighborhoods in Marion County into dynamic centers for culture, commerce, and community by the year 2020. ‘38th and Shine’ is the winning entry to the 5×5 Art Competition sponsored by Great Places 2020 for the Great Place centered on 38th & Illinois and was won by artist collaborators Asa Gauen and Stefan Eicher. ‘38th and Shine’ is a partnership between various institutions, local organizations, neighborhood associations, and YOU! We need your help! We are looking for 1200 participants to break the world record. Sign up to be an official Participant or volunteer as a Lighting Captain, and let’s make history together! Let your sparkler count! Let’s shine!
