The Final Four: Basketball Meets Baroque

The Final Four: Basketball Meets Baroque

at Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center

March Madness is a particularly exciting season, especially in Indiana, and the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra is ready at the tip-off. The IBO, under the direction of its artistic director, Barthold Kuijken, plays music by what are often thought as the “Big Four,” composers from the Baroque era, celebrated worldwide. Maestro Kuijken writes: “…any of them could be put up front: Telemann, under whose pen every possible genre of composition turned to gold; Vivaldi, for having put the solo concerto on the world map; Handel, with his unique, glorious and extroverted synthesis of all European styles and forms to which he added his own boundless energy; and J.S. Bach, probably the greatest musical architect ever, building palaces full of spirituality and cathedrals full of splendor, with dazzling perspectives of light and depth.” On the program are Telemann’s Double Concerto in G, with soloists Kuijken and Barbara Kallaur; Kuijken plying a solo flute concerto by Vivaldi; selections from Handel’s Water Music; and Bach’s Orchestral Suite No.1 in C
