Husband and wife artists, Anna Lee Chalos-McAleese and Andrew McAleese work in different mediums, but create artwork that plays and exhibits well together.

The play of light that refracts, reflects and filters through glass has always captivated Anna Lee Chalos-McAleese. Working in glass that can be blown, cast, sawed, laminated and fused, she is able to explore and create these magical properties of glass.

Andrew McAleese merged an engineering background into a career of furniture design and production. By developing a process that uses solid wood intarsia inlay to create panels of bold new visual patterns, he creates art objects that explore mathematics, visual games and that have a unique character.

Anna Lee will provide a Kirigami (kiri means cut and gami means fold) demonstration during the reception and will offer a Kirigami class, Creative Designs in Paper, at the JCC March 16 ($40 adult or $50 for adult and one child aged 12 or younger. There is a discount for JCC members).

The class will focus on learning geometric patterns using Japanese techniques of origami (fold paper) and kirigami (cut paper). The methods were taught by Josef Albers at the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany.

We will explore sculptural and relief designs using various papers. You will need a light pencil, metal ruler, sharp scissors and a T-square if available. If you make a relief, you’ll need to have an Xacto knife with a slanted blade
