NoExit Performance and Rebecca Pappas are proud to present PARADE2017, a cumulative, outdoor performance taking place at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Indianapolis’ Garfield Park on July 8, 2017. Inspired by dance history, community resistance, and the joyful pageantry of American parades, PARADE2017 takes as its starting point Parade (1917) a collaboration between Leonide Massine, Pablo Picasso, Eric Satie, and Jean Cocteau that epitomized the modern.
Inspired by its predecessor, PARADE2017 embraces the strange, the beautiful, and the experimental. It is a site-adaptive performance that travels from the east side of the Garfield Park Conservatory to the Aquatic Center, incorporating the audience into the spectacle of the parade. Part of Garfield Park Arts Center – Indy Parks and Recreation Pack the Parks Day, the parade will be performed in six small segments that embody ideas about collectivity and resistance, the passage of time, shifting perspectives, and celebration.
The dance is performed by local dancers Lauren Curry, Tanner Hronek, Rachel Newbrough, Melanie Schreiber, and Justin Sears-Watson. Collaborators include Los Angeles-based sculptor Jill Spector, Indianapolis-raised and New York-based costume designer Joy Havens, and Indianapolis-based composer Rob Funkhauser. The project is generously supported by Ball State University’s Junior Faculty Creative Arts Award.
