This exhibition will feature new paintings and a site-specific installation by Jaqueline Cedar.
Jaqueline Cedar’s paintings construct scenarios in which subjects behave both as backdrops and participants, observers and actors. The figures in Cedar’s paintings make rote attempts to engage one another both physically and psychologically as their gestures are echoed and amplified by their environment. Adjacent structures of shape and line at once form and collapse, advancing an overall sensation of motion, depth, and atmosphere.
Cedar’s recent works involve a repetition of bodies and spaces. In her current exhibition, Mirror Mirror, Cedar depicts a range of figures caught in their own reflection, having indulged in moments of self-induced reverie. The exhibition’s title references a fable-like effort to invoke a response from an inanimate source.
