“More Light: Douglass Returns” is a full-length play authored by Indiana playwright Celeste Williams and inspired by the historic return to Indiana by prominent American abolitionist, writer and speaker Frederick Douglass in 1880. Then, he was cheered at a political rally in Noblesville, Ind. But in 1838, he was severely beaten and nearly killed by a mob in Pendleton, Ind., in 1838. The play connects to the local history of the Roberts Settlement, the first mixed-race settlement in Hamilton County.
