LA MISA CAMPESINA NICARAGÜENSE

LA MISA CAMPESINA NICARAGÜENSE

Presented by Christ Church Cathedral at Christ Church Cathedral

The Misa Campesina Nicaragüense, is only the second Spanish Language mass written in Latin America at a time when Latin countries where fighting against dictatorship, injustice and lack of dignity towards the poor. Composed by Grammy Award Winner and songwriter Carlos Mejía Godoy in 1975, he was mainly motivated after the Catholic Church had allowed the mass to be celebrated in the vernacular language, but also, after the death of Che Guevara, and the oppression of the Somoza dictatorship (1936-1979). It became one of the most important musical works representative of the Revolution in Nicaragua.

It was forbidden by the Catholic Church to be used in the liturgy because the rich descriptive texts are highly influenced by Liberation Theology, and written to tell the people about a God that is closer to its flock, using the language and regular expressions of the workers, peasants, carpenters, and construction workers of Nicaragua.

The choir and guest artists will be presenting this Spanish language Mass Saturday, September 16th, and it promises to be a night of joyful forbidden music, that without a doubt, will uplift your spirits and will involve you in a musical micro cosmos of Nicaraguan music. This concert is part of the Cathedral’s celebrations of Hispanic Heritage month and Latin American culture.
