Cindy Wingo Opening Reception

Cindy Wingo Opening Reception

Presented by SullivanMunce Cultural Center at Sullivan Munce Cultural Center

Wingo began work as a graphic designer and returned to fine art painting and drawing over 20 years ago. Her work was very realistic at the beginning of her career, but after a few years of drawing portrait commissions, she began expressing herself through abstraction and has never looked back. She believes her realistic drawings add balance to her work and has made her abstract work better. She believes you can’t abstract what you can’t draw.

She found working abstractly became a sanctuary in which she could communicate so many feelings without exposing herself completely. Each painting tells a story, so she refers to them as Abstract Narratives.

Painting has allowed her to work through some of the weighted questions in life, both politically and personally. She doesn’t believe artists choose art; it is art that chooses them. Both a blessing and a curse, she says she would be lost without it.

“It is my life force, my footprint: my souls private podium. My hope is to inspire and communicate to others through my work.” -Cindy Wingo
