Write Like a Mother

Write Like a Mother

Presented by Indiana Writers Center at Indiana Writers Center

Instructor: Natalie Solmer

Are you a mother who is finding some difficulty in writing while mothering children? Are you a mother who is writing, but is feeling challenged in allowing yourself to write about motherhood or figuring out the ‘correct’ way to do it? Are you a person who is just curious about ‘The Poetics of Motherhood’ and wants to learn more? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you might enjoy this class! We will explore a little of the history behind women daring to write about ‘the domestic’ and their struggle to have their work be taken seriously. We will read excerpts of memoir, essay, poetry and hybrid forms, and delve into writing prompts of our own. The sharing of work will be optional. We will also touch on the difficulties, as well as the advantages of writing as a mother, and I hope to pass on tips that I use to make time for writing while taking care of my two young sons. The only real requirement for this class is an open mind, as we will remember that everyone’s experience of motherhood is unique, and I hope to foster a classroom environment of inclusiveness and acceptance.
