Earth Day/Israel at 70 Celebration

Earth Day/Israel at 70 Celebration

Presented by JCC Indianapolis at Arthur M. Glick Jewish Community Center (JCC Indy)

More than 70 Organizations Participating

The highlight of the JCC’s 7th annual Earth Day Community Celebration sponsored by Citizens Energy Group and Indianapolis Power & Light Company is a celebration of Israel at 70 and the ultimate demonstration of eco-friendly living. More than 70 organizations will be participating, each with a hands-on, earth-friendly activity (see the organization/activity list below). Alex Cicelsky, from the Kibbutz Lotan and Center for Creative Ecology in Israel, will be leading construction of geodesic domes. Founded in 1983, the Kibbutz Lotan is located in the Negev desert in southern Israel and is an eco-Jewish community focusing on organic food production, ecological building methods and permaculture design.

The event attracts between 2,000-3,500 visitors to the JCC’s 40-acre campus and is on Sunday, April 22 from noon to 4 pm. Tikkun olam is a Jewish value/tradition which translated means “repairing the world.” It implies that each person has a hand in working toward the betterment of his/her own existence as well as the lives of future generations. Participants of all backgrounds and faiths are welcome to this year’s event which includes participation by almost all organizations in the Jewish community. The event is free. Donations are appreciated.

Among this year’s highlights:

·         Help build a geodesic dome with our special guest from Kibbutz Lotan in Israel. To guarantee participation, register for a geodesic dome building team. It’s free. There will be a viewing area for those not participating in the build.

·         Family Learning Event. Prior to Earth Day is an “Israel at 70” Family Learning Event from 10 am-noon by and for those in the Jewish community. Activities include creating portraits of famous Israelis using everyday objects, make a map of Israel out of cardboard and other recycled materials, and use upcycled fabric to put together an Israeli flag. Finished projects will be on display during the JCC’s Earth Day Community Celebration.

·         Live Music on the WTTS Stage. Enjoy live music from the Holy Band (from the Holy Land). Also on the stage: Israeli Zumba. And there will be kosher Israeli street food for sale by the JCC’s J Café.

·         Tour two completely new tiny houses on site! Patrons may avoid the expected lines by registering for a preview tour of the tiny houses before Earth Day starts! There will be a $5 fee for preview tours of the rentable tiny house. Tours once Earth Day starts at noon are free.

·         Enter a raffle for a chance to win a top of the line drone from Robert’s Camera! It is operated by hand movements and has collision avoidance. Tickets for the raffle are $5 for a ticket (or $10 for 3 tickets). (Licensed by Indiana Charity Gaming.)
