Lesley Baker: Fragile

Lesley Baker: Fragile

Presented by Gallery 924 at Gallery 924

Lesley Baker is best known for her contemporary ceramic sculpture featuring small hybrid animals and familiar forms layered with appropriated images of natural and cultural references. By using ceramics to represent preciousness, raw materials, and history, the various altered natural forms are meant to ask the viewer to look more closely at the world around them. The fauna and flora are the innocents represented in the work not quite understanding the changes that are happening to them and around them. Much like how we are presented information through mass media, the true message is not always obvious. There is always uncertainty as to whether the message is ultimately good or bad. In her first Gallery 924 solo exhibition, Baker will share new work related to her animal hybrids, decorative plate forms with text and decals, and new experimental sound works.

Baker is an associate professor of art at Herron School of Art + Design and a 2013 Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellow.
