Mid-Century Modern Talk

Mid-Century Modern Talk

Presented by Indiana Landmarks at Indiana Landmarks Center

Indiana Landmarks’ Indiana Modern affinity group hosts an illustrated talk by Susan Skarsgard, “Then & Now: Designing Women at General Motors.” As one of GM’s designing women, she offers an insider’s view of the trailblazers who have played roles in automotive and industrial design at GM from the 1940s through the present.

When you look at a Chevrolet or Buick, you see Susan Skarsgard’s lettering design. Employed at General Motors Design since 1994, she created vehicle emblems and lettering for automotive nameplates and corporate & brand identity. As design manager of the GM Design Archive & Special Collections, she handles publication design, archive management & development, communication design, hand-lettering and brand identity.

Based at the corporate headquarters in Warren, Michigan, Skarsgard will also share reflections on the GM Technical Center, the National Historic Landmark campus in Warren designed by Eero Saarinen in 1956, the subject of a book she developed that will be released next year.

Prior to Skarsgard’s talk, Indiana Landmarks will present its annual central Indiana preservation awards. The awards presentation begins at 5:45 p.m. The talk begins at 6 p.m., followed by a Q&A at 6:45 p.m.

Thanks to support from RATIO and the Cornelius O’Brien Lecture Series Concerning Historic Preservation, the talk is free and open to the public with your online reservation or by calling 317-639-4534.
