“Recent Works: Nathan Winship Smith,” a collection of clay artwork by the eponymous artist, will be the featured for the October First Friday Art Tour, on Friday, October 5th, 6-9pm at the Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9). Admission is free.
“My work is a critique on rules, laws, and social conventions that seem to govern social identities and individuality,” explained Winship Smith. He will present clay vessels and wall sculptures embodying multiple historical contexts through form and imagery. “The work aims to question the absurdity and seriousness of ideas about how individuality and social identity is created or lived into.”
Nathan Winship Smith is the Artist in Residence, Instructor and Studio Manager of the Beech Grove Clay Works, and adjunct faculty in the Humanities Department of Ivy Tech College, teaching Art History. An alumni of Herron School of Art and the University of Notre Dame, with a focus in Ceramics, Art History and Gender Studies, Winship Smith says that patrons should expect to encounter a familiar—yet fresh—approach to ceramics that will comfort and humor them, while still illuminating and questioning the construction of social identity as well as notions of individualism in ceramic work that appears quite heavy but is, in reality, very light in weight.
The Full Circle Nine Gallery operates as an artist cooperative gallery, with each of the over a dozen member artists and the board dividing gallery duties and artists roles. The artists will work together to help each other advance in skill and practice, as well as to bring success to the gallery. It is located at 1125 Brookside Ave., Indianapolis, IN, 46202, in the South Studios section of the Circle City Industrial Complex.
