Put Some Glass On It—A Reclamation by the Versatility of Glass

Put Some Glass On It—A Reclamation by the Versatility of Glass

Presented by Full Circle Nine Gallery at Full Circle Nine Gallery

“Just as there is versatility in glass, there is use and new purpose for items unfortunately destined for a trash pile,” said Nicole Staab. “By combining various mediums with something as beautiful as stained glass, I am able to convert otherwise discarded items into something new, beautiful, and inspiring.

My show is about imagination and the beauty of second chances. By upcycling Items like wood and old windows and incorporating other complimentary elements, I am able to highlight the adaptability of stained glass.”

Nicole Staab is a self-taught artist, concentrating in glass mosaic work. She enjoys working in the combination of materials, from the glass itself, to the grout, to the backing surfaces, and the manipulation of all three to create her desired effect. “Creating mosaics has given me a chance to work with many different mediums on a single project. From the rough sketch design of each piece, to the finished glass and grout, I am able to create different styles and textures,” she said. Staab enjoys commission orders, and finding the best way to create the client’s chosen imagery, but she also stretches her own imagination and refining her own designs.

“Stained glass can be delicate and tough, easy-going and temperamental,” explained Staab. “It allows me to give a project a different look in different settings, from the lighting to mirroring the stained glass. A piece can completely change depending on how I treat it. By using stained glass, I am able to add vibrant colors and textures to my designs. ‘Swimming with the Current’ came about as a desire to capture how rigid glass can be given a look of smooth fluidity through the current of a stream or the flip of a koi tail.”
