Entitled “A Presidential Salute to Leonard Bernstein,” this concert will conclude Butler University’s year-long 100th birthday tribute to this American musical icon.
In addition to including selections that relate to the president and the White House, the program also features soloists from “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Vocal soloists GySgt Sara Sheffield and MSgt Kevin Bennear will perform selections from “A White House Cantata,” a work released after Bernstein’s death, and compiled from music originally written for the composer’s little known collaboration with Alan Jay Lerner, “1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.” This unique Broadway musical, composed in our nation’s bicentennial year of 1976, conveyed American history as viewed from the perspective of the residents of the executive mansion. GySgt Patrick Morgan, Assistant Principal Clarinetist in the Marine Band, will perform Bernstein’s “Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs,” a jazz-inspired score composed in 1949 for Woody Hermann. This concert also features music from the only film score Bernstein ever composed, a suite of hauntingly beautiful and exciting music written for “On the Waterfront.” Please join us for a program that promises to be a truly singular salute to Leonard Bernstein.
