Onyx + East artist reception and open studio night

Onyx + East artist reception and open studio night

at Harrison Center for the Arts

The Harrison Center, in partnership with Onyx + East, present Onyx + East, an artist reception and open studio night on Friday, December 7 from 6:00 to 10:00pm. In the Harrison Gallery, the longstanding annual color-themed holiday group show features onyx-hued work from dozens of local artists. The theme spills into our Gallery Annex with work by Patrick Reith and Tonya Wong.

In Speck Gallery, Jake Sneath’s Engraven Images “investigates our relationship with the camera as a necessary apparatus to see, explore and discover. Appropriating images of space exploration, manipulating photographic papers, as well as the creation of light and video installations make up the core of my studio practice.”

Bloomington-based artist Mark Blaney bring his show, Learning About Light, to Hank & Dolly’s Gallery.  “Painting helps me to enjoy the visual pleasures around us by allowing me a symbolic language of line, color and form.”

The INDIEana Handicraft Exchange’s Winter Mini fills the gymnasium and Underground with their juried show of modern craft vendors just in time for holiday shopping.

This season, the City Gallery is transformed into a holiday pop up shop filled with work from our own Harrison Center studio artists. The shop opens on First Friday, but is also open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 throughout the month for holiday shoppers’ convenience.

First Friday attendees can grab a complimentary coffee or cocoa in the courtyard, then head around the building for the annual Holiday Window Tour. Artists have transformed the 22 ground level windows with winter-themed vignettes. The tour, which began in 2015, has been expanded this year to include eight storefront windows at the Circle Centre Mall in the former Carson’s display windows.

The Harrison Center is home to 36 artists whose studios are open in December. This month is the final open studio night of 2018 and guests can wander the building and meet the makers who call the Harrison Center home.

December exhibits hang through December 28.
