Formed in 1981, Kodo is a large performing arts collective focused on the taiko, a family of traditional Japanese drums made of wood and animal hide, although performances also include other Japanese and Western instruments. At the group’s home base on Sado Island, Japan, young apprentices live communally and undergo two years of rigorous education and physical training before graduating to junior membership and ultimately earning status as full members of the performing ensemble.
The current tour with a 15-member troupe is the American premiere of the “Evolution” program, developed for Kodo’s 35thanniversary in 2016.
