Celestine Bloomfield shares stories of this church which is a landmark on the Underground Railroad through the voices of the women. Meet Sarah Lucas, Amanda Finney, Elizabeth McIntosh, Rose Carter and other church members as they lend their voices.
Most New Albany residents refer to the Second Baptist Church as The Town Clock Church. Its majestic steeple can be seen beckoning all. Celestine Bloomfield shares stories about how the original church members were ahead of their time. When newspaper articles said they were running out of time and predicted the demise of this historic building in the nick of time it was saved, restored and thrives today as the only historical African American entity near Mansion Row. Celestine learned that every third grader in Floyd County visits this landmark on the Underground Railroad. But she is letting the women of the church tell this story. Meet Sarah Lucas, Amanda Finney, Elizabth McIntosh, Rose Carter and others as they lend their voices in the creation of this story.
Indiana Landmarks and Storytelling Arts of Indiana, with generous support from Frank and Katrina Basile, developed the If These Walls Could Tell series in 2011 to honor the winners of the Cook Cup Award for Outstanding Restoration. These original stories inspired by historical Indiana buildings are about the people who have built, lived, worked, gathered and restored these vintage places.
