Vintage Movie Night: Sagebrush Troubadour (1935) and Git Along Little Dogies (1937)

Presented by Garfield Park Arts Center at Unknown

Not one, but two, Gene Autry films for your pleasure on Saturday, February 23, at 7 p.m. at the Garfield Park Arts Center, 2432 Conservatory Drive, screened by film historian Eric Grayson.

This month’s Vintage Movie Night Series will feature Sagebrush Troubadour (1935) and Git Along Little Dogies (1937). In Sagebrush, Ranger Gene Autry (Gene Autry) and his partner, Frog (Smiley Burnette), masquerade as entertainers on the trail while searching for the killer of an old man who found a gold mine. The victim’s will reveals he’s left his estate to his granddaughter, Joan (Barbara Pepper), and $5,000 to her Uncle John (Frank Glendon). Suspicious of Gene and Frog when they arrive in town, John and Joan set a trap to lure the singers to them. The tables are turned, however, when there is an attempt on Joan’s life.

The second film, made two years later, again features Autry playing a character named Gene Autry, this time a ranch owner who seeks to protect his land from the possibility of pollution. He sides with fellow ranchers who are fighting the plans of banker Maxwell (William Farnum), who wants to drill oil wells. But when Gene realizes the discovery of oil would bring a railroad to the area and create much-needed jobs, he switches sides. Conniving local businessman George Wilkins (Weldon Heyburn) turns investors against Gene and Maxwell, however, hoping to slip in and take over the oil business.
