Healing Arts Indy presents: Plans for Automatic Drawings, works by John Clark.
The hardest part of creative activity might be simply getting started. Clark employs various automatic techniques pioneered by the Surrealists to get a running start on his experiments in drawing and painting. A piece of paper placed upon objects such as leaves, wood grain or even metal patio furniture may obtain some surprising images when rubbed with crayon, graphite or charcoal. These images spark further transformations when details are added and may offer insights into the creative process. Other automatic techniques use blueprints, graph paper or canvas with preexisting lines, text and paint that work as prompts or clues to create further elaborations and transformation.
