This group performs music by jazz masters such as Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, and Thelonious Monk, as well as songs written for Broadway musicals during the early part of the 20th century. Tonight’s performance features guest soloist and nationally-known saxophonist Rob Dixon with the UIndy Jazz Combo and members of the UIndy Jazz Faculty (saxophonist Mark O’Connor, trombonist Ernest Stuart, pianist Steven Jones, bassist Brandon Meeks, and drummer Kenny Phelps). Dixon has worked with such top artists as Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Rufus Reid, the Count Basie Orchestra, and the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra. Dixon’s latest album, Coast to Crossroads, features guitarist Charlie Hunter, Headhunters drummer Mike Clark, and trombonist Ernest Stuart. Dixon is the Artistic Director for Indy Jazz Fest, teaches at Earlham College and IUPUI, and is the founder and music director of the Indianapolis Jazz Collective.
