Cinderella

Presented by Ballet Theatre of Indiana at Basile Theatre at the Historic Athenaeum

Ballet Theatre of Indiana’s fifth season will close with an all new Cinderella to the classic score by Prokofiev. Rather than simply resetting the ballet, BTI’s Stirling Matheson (Artistic Director) and Michelle Quenon (Dancer, Social Media Editor) have restructured the ballet to tell a more complete and more moving story. It is Michelle’s first time choreographing on the company.

“Cinderella is a beloved fairy tale, but the ballet has usually felt a bit flat to me” says Matheson. “Our prince, begins the ball bored and irreverent and doesn’t change his attitude until Cinderella arrives. He’s fed up with the preening of the court and it gives him a real personality.”

All of this new choreography is happening in front of two new commissioned backdrops from Kent, Ohio-based artist Joshua Bentley. BTI is planning to contract a wide breadth of talented artists to begin building a robust collection of drops in the coming years, and the Cinderella drops are the first steps in that direction. The Cinderella drops will be available to rent when not in use by BTI.

Performances are April 18th at 7:30pm, April 19th at 7:30pm, and April 20th at 3:00pm and 7:30pm at the Basile Theatre at the Historic Athenaeum. Tickets are $25 plus ticketing fees and are available at btindiana.org/events.
