Throw Caution artist reception/open studio night/Indy 500 Porch Party Kick Off

Presented by Harrison Center at Harrison Center for the Arts

The Harrison Center and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway present “Throw Caution,” an artist reception and kick off to the Indy 500 Porch Party season. This is the fourth year that the Speedway has joined with the Harrison Center to promote “porching” in the month of May, encouraging people to gather with their friends and neighbors on their front porches to enjoy each other’s company and strengthen community in their neighborhoods.

In the Harrison Gallery, Quincy Owens takes a break from his work in the public art realm (with Owens + Crawley), and returns to his painting roots in “Throwing Caution.” For this body of work, the big, bold scale and colorful, expressive style take their inspiration from the greatest spectacle itself. Owens explains that these process-oriented paintings were created by building up layer after layer and through the repetition, treating the pieces like a documentation of time.

The Speck Gallery features work by over 20 artists that celebrates the art of “porching.” From paintings to whimsical, but functional ceramic pieces to porch furniture, this show sets the tone for the season.

Freelance photographer Eston Baumer brings his Indy 500 work to the City Gallery. Baumer’s work has appeared in local newspapers, offices and galleries.

The Underground Gallery features EtherealLand, pairing the surreal landscapes of painter Benaiah Cusack and a handblown glass installation by Matt Kenyon.  Opening night  includes a fashion show of work by Katy Newton.

Queen of Hearts, a collection of Kyle Ragsdale’s monotype prints created in Guanajuato, Mexico hang in the Gallery Annex.

Naptown Stomp returns this First Friday with live music and swing dancing in the gym.

The Harrison Center is home to 36 artists whose studios are open in May. Guests can wander the building and meet the makers who call the Harrison Center home.

May exhibits hang through May 31.
