Data Bash Electracoustic Chamber Music Concert

Presented by Donald Tavel Arts and Technology Research Center, IUPUI at Indiana Historical Society Frank and Katrina Basile Theater

An evening of fantastical new music featuring the acclaimed Deal – Fried Duo presenting works stemming from,or played with, computers. The resulting music is a magical meld of artificial intelligence, live electronics, and musicians. Percussionist Scott Deal and pianist William Fried will perform music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composers Roger Reynolds and John Luther Adams, as well as works by Elainie Lillios, Phillippe Hurel, and Scott Deal. The Donald Tavel Arts Technology Research Center at IUPUI is sponsoring this event in partnership with the Indiana Historical Society.

Listen to the concert performed previously and aired by NPR Station WDAV in Charlotte, NC.

RECENT REVIEWS
“The piece, performed by pianist William Fried and percussionist Scott Deal on bells and vibraphone, was underscored by an electronic soundtrack whose source sounds were derived from the featured instruments themselves…From the performers’ perspective, Adams’ complex rhythms had to hold their own ground and thus required intense concentration, a challengewhich Fried and Deal met with soul and utmost care. Adams’ work somehow managed to sound delicate but not fragile, determined but not forceful, and bright but not blinding; the performance was a truly engrossing one”

Adams’ penchant for mathematically derived teleology was most apparent in Ilimaq, in which the brilliant solo percussionist, Scott Deal, serves as a Shaman, guiding one on a journey into one’s own interiority…The accuracy, exuberance –and sheer endurance –shown in percussionist Scott Deal’s performance of Ilimaqcast him within therealm of a Herculean hero!Kate Mackin, Vancouver Classical Music“

As the poised and remarkably dexterous pianist William Fried showed in his surprisingly lyrical performance -created not only with fingers but fingertips and knuckles and fists -the result is a ghostly mingling of past and present sounds in a hypnotic landscape of memory. A rich, densely impressionistic sonic canvas emerges, recalling Debussy, and Monet’s paintings of cathedrals bathed in multicolored fog and mist.”
