Cha Jong Rye: Sculptural Landscapes

Cha Jong Rye: Sculptural Landscapes

Presented by Long-Sharp Gallery at Long-Sharp Gallery

Long-Sharp Gallery announces the first US solo exhibition for important South Korean sculptor Cha Jong Rye.  The exhibit, Cha Jong Rye: Sculptural Landscapes celebrates new work by the artist and the announcement of her exclusive U.S. representation by Long-Sharp Gallery.

Based in Seoul, Ms. Rye has been sculpting for over 20 years. Her exhibit in Indianapolis will be her first solo exhibition in the Midwest; it is her first solo exhibition in the United States in seven years.Using wood as her chosen medium, Ms. Rye constructs seamlessly intricate wooden landscapes through her often wall-mounted sculptures. Sanding and layering hundreds of delicate wood boards, her process is intentionally unintentional; rather than executing a predetermined design, she allows herself to discover images in the fluidity of arranging and rearranging the uniquely hand-shaped blocks. The result is a richly textured three-dimensional canvas upon which light and shadow dance, transforming the once-recognizable wood material into entirely abstracted landscapes reminiscent of wrinkled linen or rippling water. Her solo exhibit will include over ten new works in the artist’s signature style.

Ms. Rye and two of her associates will make the trek from Seoul South Korean to Indianapolis for the opening, which is free and open to the public.  It will take place at Long-Sharp Gallery, One North Illinois, Suite A., Indianapolis, on September 6 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm.
